Hi there, retirees!
Would you like to work 10-20 hours per week, possibly more, sharing your handy skills with our grateful customers? How about complete schedule flexibility to take a few weeks off whenever you want? If yes, keep reading…
What we offer:
- The chance to earn a decent hourly rate.
- The chance to put your mind and body to work.
What you bring:
- Some handy skills. Let me know what you do well and what you’d rather not do. Maybe you’re a retired electrical engineer and have no concerns replacing a circuit breaker but you’d rather not repair siding on the second story of a house. Perhaps you’re fine with heights but want nothing to do with toilet replacement.
- Tools. You’ll need to provide your own basics:
- Cordless drill
- Circular saw
- Ladder(s)
- Hand tools, screw drivers, hammer, saw, pliers, socket and wrench set, etc.
- Paint brush and some basic painting accessories.
- Extension cords
- Measuring tools
- Etc.
- Vehicle. You’ll need your own transportation.
What we’re not:
- A full time employer. It’s possible you could work 40 hours per week but not consistently, you can’t bank on it. If you need full time work, this isn’t the right fit. There’s also some seasonality in this business, we’ll be slow after Christmas and into February.
- A remodeling company. We don’t bid on $20,000 jobs to redo anyone’s kitchen or add a sunroom. We’re happy to install a couple of cabinets and a countertop or replace/repair some flooring. We target jobs that you can finish in a day or less. If you have a lot of experience with remodels, we can talk.
- A company with benefits. No retirement plan, no health care options. We do however have worker’s comp.
The Ins and Outs:
- Hourly pay varies depending on the job and on the customer. If I get to a customer’s house and clearly, they don’t have any money, I reduce the rate, sometimes dramatically. You aren’t obligated to charge a charitable rate, but I certainly won’t hold it against you.
- We give estimates up front, often based on pictures. Sometimes it makes for a very profitable job, sometimes the hourly rate works out to less than I hoped as it takes longer than expected to complete the work. As you gain more experience and can finish jobs quickly, your hourly rate of pay will increase. We also make it clear, if we find more damage than is visible, we may have to charge more.
- This can be physically demanding work and it can happen on a cold winter day or a sweaty summer scorcher. On the hot days I get a very early start and wrap up before noon. It’s fine to spread a job across multiple days. I want everyone to work safely.
- Personally, I target jobs within 10 miles of home. The longer you have to drive to get to the job, the less you’re really earning. You can set your own radius. The bigger the radius the more potential for jobs. If it’s a slow week, yes, I’ll drive 45 minutes to take on a job.
